Pasture, Rangeland and Forage - Rainfall Index (PRF-RI) insurance coverage is designed to give forage and livestock producers the ability to buy insurance protection for losses of forage produced for grazing or harvested for hay, based on expected rainfall in 12x12 mile grids. Protection is based on weather data from NOAA - long term changes in "average precipitation" for a specific area and time frame.
Coverage is based on a dollar amount of protection per acre and varies by type and county.
The sales closing date and the acreage reporting date are November 15 preceding the start of the crop year. The crop year is from January 1 to December 31.
